What is the use of the %n format specifier in C? - Stack Overflow
@AndrewS &n is a pointer (& is the address-of operator); a pointer is necessary because C is pass-by-value, and without a pointer, printf could not modify the value of n. The %*s usage in the printf format string prints a %s specifier (in this case the empty string "") using a field width of n characters.
